How Carver Gate Repair Was Born

Back in 2008, we were working for another gate company out of Los Angeles when a call came in that stuck with us. A homeowner in the Valley had been quoted fourteen hundred dollars to replace what turned out to be a failed Ghost Controls actuator – a three-hundred-dollar part, two hours of work. The technician before us had told her the whole system was shot, that the gate was too old, that she needed a full replacement. She was a widow on a fixed income, and she paid because she didn’t know what else to do.

We fixed it that afternoon for the cost of the part plus labor. She cried. Not from gratitude, though there was that – from the feeling of having been played. That night, Lonnie Burke sat in a diner on Ventura Boulevard with a coffee going cold and wrote three things on a napkin: price in writing before any work starts, no part gets replaced unless it’s actually failed, and every customer gets told what we found and why it matters. Carver Gate Repair started the next Monday. We kept that napkin. It’s framed in our office now.

What began as one truck in Los Angeles grew because that same standard traveled well. Today our locations serve homeowners across Brooklyn, Houston, Queens, Manhattan, San Antonio, San Diego, Dallas, Fort Worth, Jacksonville, Austin, and San Jose. Each office runs independently, but every one of them works to the same promise we wrote down in 2008.

Lonnie Burke’s Personal Connection to the Gate Repair Trade

Lonnie didn’t start in gates. Started in automotive, actually – grew up pulling transmissions and chasing electrical gremlins through engine bays that smelled of burnt oil and coolant. The work was honest, but it wasn’t his. What drew him to gates was the moment of relief. A car engine starts and the driver is satisfied. A gate opens after it’s been stuck for three days and the homeowner is relieved. There’s a difference. He felt it the first time he freed a swing gate in Brentwood that had trapped a family’s cars behind it for a weekend. The motor had overheated, the limit switches were out of sync, and the safety edges hadn’t been calibrated in years. When that gate finally swung smooth and the safety loop caught his boot and reversed it like it should, the homeowner just stood there and laughed. That sound – that’s what got Lonnie out of bed the next morning, and the morning after that, for more than a decade now.

The trade itself suits him. Gates are mechanical, electrical, and structural all at once. A gate tech needs to read a schematic, pour concrete, weld a hinge, and explain to a customer why their Viking operator keeps faulting in the rain – sometimes all before lunch. The work smells like ozone and grease and hot steel. Your hands get nicked. Your boots get concrete on them. At the end of the day, something that was broken works again, and you can see it working.

If Lonnie weren’t doing this, he’d probably be building furniture in a small shop somewhere, making sawdust and joints that fit tight. The impulse is the same: figure out how something moves, fix what’s stopping it, make it last. Gates just happened to be where that impulse found its purpose.

Meet Lonnie Burke – The Person Behind Every Job

Lonnie Burke is the Owner and Founder of Carver Gate Repair. He holds every certification his trade demands and has spent the last eighteen years working on gates in every condition a coastal climate and a desert climate can throw at them – salt corrosion in San Diego, clay expansion in Dallas, freeze-thaw in Brooklyn winters. He’s trained technicians who now run their own crews, and he still picks up a wrench when a job needs the person who started it all.

What separates Lonnie from a franchise technician sent from a dispatch board is simple: he built the standard. He wrote the checklist. When a Carver tech arrives at your home, they’re working from procedures Lonnie developed, tested, and revised over years of seeing what fails and why. His hobby is fishing, the patient kind, where you watch the water longer than you pull on it. That patience shows up in his work – the willingness to trace a low-voltage fault for an hour rather than guess and replace parts.

Here’s his commitment to you, directly: if a Carver crew works on your gate, Lonnie stands behind what they do. Not as a slogan. As a person you can ask for by name.

Our Promise to Homeowners

We operate by The Garrison Code, and it’s printed on every invoice we send out.

  • Show up inside the window we gave. We learned early that “between 8 and 5” is not a window, it’s a hostage situation. We give a two-hour range, and we hit it. If we’re running late, we call before you have to wonder.
  • Price in writing before any work starts. This was the first promise on that napkin, and it’s non-negotiable. You’ll see the full cost, parts and labor separated, before we touch a tool. No surprises, no “while we were in there” additions.
  • Do it by the book, the first time. Every gate we service gets checked against the same checklist Lonnie developed: hinges, rollers, chain tension, limit switches, safety edges, auto-reverse force, photo eyes aligned and clean. Skip a step and something fails early. We don’t skip steps.
  • Leave the site clean and squared away. Concrete dust gets swept. Old parts get bagged and offered to you. The gate area looks like we were never there, except the gate works.
  • Stand behind the work for a full year. If anything we repaired or installed fails within twelve months, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s The Garrison Standard, and it’s stamped on every job.

Our Credentials

Every pro working under the Carver Gate Repair name is required to hold the license and insurance their state requires. We are state-licensed, insured, and bonded. We carry the coverage necessary to work on residential properties, and we maintain it without lapse.

Why this matters to you: a gate is heavy, motorized equipment under tension. An uninsured technician who gets hurt on your property can become your liability. An unlicensed installer who doesn’t pull the permit your city requires can leave you with a code violation when you sell your home. Our paperwork is current, our coverage is real, and we’re happy to provide proof before any work starts.

Our reputation in the markets we serve has been built one job at a time, over eighteen years. No rating we could quote would mean as much as the neighbor who tells you, “They came when they said, charged what they quoted, and the gate still works.”

Rooted in the Communities We Serve

Carver started in Los Angeles, but we’re not an LA company pretending to be local everywhere else. Each of our locations – Brooklyn, Houston, Queens, Manhattan, San Antonio, San Diego, Dallas, Fort Worth, Jacksonville, Austin, San Jose – is an independent business run by people who live in that market, know its permits, its soil conditions, its weather patterns. They agreed to work to The Garrison Standard because it works, but they’re the ones answering the phone, dispatching the crew, and standing behind the job in their city. We’re a network of local pros with a shared name and a shared discipline. That’s the Carver way.
