LiftMaster Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock and install LiftMaster-compatible keypads and intercom entry systems across Los Angeles, with most repairs completed same day at $280 – $520 installed depending on model series and wiring condition. Our trucks carry the KPW250, KPW5, and EL1SS series units plus the common intercom boards for LA’s prevalent 1990s – 2010s estate installations. Most owners realize something’s wrong when the keypad beeps but the gate doesn’t move, or when the intercom goes silent mid-conversation and the visitor’s stuck outside in the driveway.
Which LiftMaster Models This Applies To
LiftMaster keypads and intercoms span several distinct product lines, and matching the right replacement means reading the label inside the battery compartment or on the back plate before ordering anything.
For keypads, we regularly service the KPW250 wireless (the black residential unit with the flip cover), the KPW5 hardwired (common on commercial swing gates in Burbank and Glendale), and the older 877MAX/877LM wireless units still mounted on thousands of Pasadena and San Marino estate columns. The KPW250 runs on a 312MHz radio protocol; the KPW5 requires a four-conductor low-voltage run from the operator. Swapping a wireless for a hardwired unit, or vice versa, means running new cable or adding a radio receiver, which changes the job scope and price.
Intercom systems break down into the EL1SS surface-mount (the stainless box with the call button), the EL25 wired (two-wire system for longer gate-to-house distances), and the discontinued LA-400/LA-500 series intercom boards that LiftMaster stopped manufacturing around 2016. For the LA-series boards, we source quality aftermarket equivalents from our supplier in Vernon; they’re not OEM, but they carry the same one-year guarantee and cost 30 – 40% less than hunting down NOS stock.
We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with LiftMaster. We work on their equipment because we’ve trained on it, and because nine out of ten automatic gates in Los Angeles County run on one of nine brands we stock.
Signs Your LiftMaster Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
- Keypad lights up, beeps, but gate won’t open. Usually the radio transmitter board inside the keypad is sending, but the receiver on the operator isn’t hearing it. In the Valley’s summer heat, the 312MHz crystals drift out of spec after seven to ten years. We test signal strength at the operator before we replace anything.
- Intercom crackles, cuts out, or goes completely dead when the call button is pressed. The EL-series boards have a known weak point: the audio amplifier chip fails where the two-wire line meets the house unit. Moisture intrusion from failed gaskets accelerates this, especially on north-facing gates in the Hollywood Hills where fog sits till noon.
- Keypad buttons require hard presses or don’t register at all. The membrane switches underneath the rubber buttons oxidize from UV exposure. On west-facing installations in Santa Monica and Pacific Palisades, we’ve seen this at five years instead of the usual ten.
- Keypad displays “Err” or flashes rapidly after code entry. The microcontroller is losing its programming, often from voltage spikes on shared transformer runs. We isolate the power feed and reprogram; if the memory’s corrupted, the board’s done.
- Intercom works, but the gate release button inside the house does nothing. The dry-contact relay on the intercom board has burned contacts from arcing. This is a $12 part, but it’s buried in a sealed board on most LiftMaster units, so we replace the whole assembly to avoid a callback.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Service | Typical Range (Los Angeles) |
|---|---|
| Keypad replacement, wireless (KPW250/877MAX equivalent) | $280 – $380 |
| Keypad replacement, hardwired with new conduit run | $380 – $520 |
| Intercom board replacement, surface-mount (EL1SS) | $320 – $450 |
| Intercom board replacement, wired system (EL25/LA-series) | $420 – $580 |
| Diagnostic only (credited toward repair if completed) | $95 |
These are installed prices, parts plus labor, with the written price delivered before we start. What moves the number: whether the existing low-voltage cable is intact (copper thieves in the Arts District and older Mid-Wilshire installations have made this a real variable), whether the mounting surface is stucco-over-block or wood post, and whether we need to reprogram multiple remotes or house stations to the new unit. The guarantee is in writing on every repair, good for a full year, with a free second visit if anything fails inside that window.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s safe checking, and then there’s the part where most owners wish they’d stopped.
What you can do: verify the keypad has fresh batteries (the KPW250 takes a 9V, not AAs, and the polarity marking wears off), check that the intercom’s transformer is putting out 16 – 24VAC at the gate, and confirm no landscaper has severed the low-voltage run with a weed whacker. These three checks solve maybe 15% of calls we get.
Where DIY goes wrong: the KPW5 and intercom boards connect to line-voltage-adjacent circuits in the operator housing. Opening that housing without lockout procedure risks contact with 120V terminals inches from the low-voltage terminals. We’ve also seen owners bridge the wrong relay contacts and fry a $400 logic board. The wiring color codes changed between LiftMaster production runs; orange isn’t always common, and black isn’t always hot. If you’re not certain which revision you have, the wrong assumption gets expensive fast.
We show up squared away, fix what’s broken, and don’t make the customer ask twice. Call (469) 530-2485 and we’ll dispatch a background-checked, uniformed technician with the right unit on the truck.
FAQs
Seven to twelve years for keypads, with wireless units on south- or west-facing gates failing sooner from UV and heat cycling. Intercom boards average ten to fifteen years if the gasket seal holds; once moisture gets in, count on two to three years before the audio chip fails. Call (469) 530-2485 for an exact quote on replacement, estimates are free.
Sometimes. A cracked membrane pad or corroded battery terminal we can fix in the field. But the radio boards and intercom logic boards are sealed assemblies with no user-serviceable components; manufacturers stopped selling discrete chips years ago. When we open it up and see potting compound or a single-board design, we quote replacement so you’re not paying diagnostic time for a dead end. Call (469) 530-2485 for an exact quote, estimates are free.
Forty-five minutes to an hour for a straight keypad swap with good wiring. Intercom replacements run ninety minutes to two hours if we’re fishing new cable through existing conduit or reprogramming multiple house stations. We schedule arrival windows, not “sometime Tuesday,” and the technician calls thirty minutes out. Call (469) 530-2485 to book.
Yes. Our Los Angeles trucks carry the KPW250, KPW5, EL1SS, and EL25 units, plus the aftermarket LA-series replacement boards. For discontinued colors or custom finishes (bronze, antique brass), we order overnight from our Vernon supplier and return to install next day at no additional trip charge. Call (469) 530-2485 to confirm availability for your model.
