FAAC Welding & Fabrication: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock and install FAAC-compatible welded brackets, hinge reinforcements, and custom fabrication for gate operators across Los Angeles, with most repairs completed same-day at $280 – $620 installed. Our trucks carry 740, 844, and S800 series mounting hardware, plus steel stock for field-fabricated solutions when OEM brackets don’t match existing gate geometry. Homeowners usually notice the problem when their FAAC swing arm starts sagging or the operator pulls away from the post – often after a bump from a delivery truck or years of vibration working the bolts loose in the softwood common to older Los Angeles hillside properties.
Which FAAC Models This Applies To
FAAC welding and fabrication work covers three main operator families in Los Angeles: the 740 series swing operators (740, 741, 742), the 844 articulated arm line (844 ER, 844 R), and the S800 underground systems (S800 ENC, S800 SBW). Each uses distinct mounting geometries. The 740 series bolts to a welded post bracket with specific hole spacing – 6.3 inches center-to-center on the standard arm, 7.1 inches on the heavy-duty variant. The 844’s articulating arm needs a reinforced jamb bracket that takes torque in two planes, not one.
Identification starts with the silver FAAC data plate on the motor housing, but the fabrication part number is usually on a separate stamped tag on the bracket itself. If that tag’s rusted off – common within five miles of the coast in Marina del Rey or San Pedro – we measure on-site. OEM brackets run $85 – $190; our fabricated equivalents use 3/16-inch A36 steel with zinc-rich primer, matching or exceeding FAAC’s original wall thickness. We also stock LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls brackets for mixed-brand properties. Carver Gate Repair is an independent service provider, not affiliated with FAAC.
Signs Your FAAC Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- Operator arm droops or binds at full open/close. The mounting bracket has cracked at the weld or the hinge pin has elongated its hole. In the Hollywood Hills, we see this where gates sit on sloped driveways and the operator fights gravity every cycle.
- Bolts loosen repeatedly after tightening. The steel bracket has wallowed out its bolt holes. Aluminum brackets on early 844 models are especially prone to this – the material creeps under cyclic load.
- Gate post twists or leans toward the operator. The weldment wasn’t gusseted for the cantilever load. We find this on 740 installations where a standard fence post was used instead of a Schedule 40 steel column set in concrete.
- Squealing or grinding from the arm connection. The bushing or pivot weld has failed, letting metal rub metal. Left alone, it destroys the operator’s output shaft – a $400+ mistake.
- Visible rust-through or cracking at bracket welds. Coastal salt air accelerates this; we replaced three in Playa del Rey last spring where the zinc coating had worn through at the weld heat-affected zone.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Service | Typical Range | What’s Included |
|---|---|---|
| Bracket/weldment replacement (standard) | $280 – $420 | Removal, new fabricated bracket, hardware, anti-seize, re-level operator |
| Heavy-duty post reinforcement + bracket | $450 – $620 | Schedule 40 post sleeve, concrete collar, gusseted bracket, full rehang |
| Custom geometry fabrication | $380 – $580 | Field measurement, CAD layout, welded assembly, painted or galvanized finish |
| Emergency stabilization (same-day) | $320 – $480 | Temp bracket or weld repair to secure gate, permanent fix scheduled |
What drives the range: post condition (rotted wood or rusted steel needs more than a bracket), gate weight (over 600 lbs needs heavier material), and access (tight hillside gates in Los Angeles take longer to rig). Every price is written and agreed before we strike an arc. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise – if a weld cracks or a bolt loosens inside a year, we come back free. No argument, no invoice.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a short list of checks that won’t make things worse. Verify the mounting bolts are the correct grade – FAAC specifies Grade 8.8 metric for most brackets, and swapping in hardware-store zinc bolts is a common self-inflicted wound. Look for obvious cracks in paint lines at weld toes. Measure gate sag with the operator disconnected; more than two inches of free drop means the gate itself needs attention, not just the bracket.
Where DIY ends: cutting or welding on a loaded gate. The torsion and weight are unpredictable, and a bracket letting go mid-cut can drop several hundred pounds of iron. Same for grinding near the operator’s limit switches – one spark in the wrong housing and you’ve added a control-board replacement to the job. We show up squared away, fix what’s broken, and don’t make the customer ask twice. If you’re unsure what failed, call (469) 530-2485. We’ll diagnose it on the first visit rather than sell you parts the gate doesn’t need.
FAQs
Properly fabricated and coated, expect 12 – 18 years inland, 8 – 12 years within three miles of the coast. Salt air accelerates corrosion at weld heat-affected zones where the zinc coating burns off. We specify zinc-rich primer plus epoxy topcoat for coastal jobs, which adds about $40 to the bracket cost and roughly doubles service life. Sometimes, if the crack is in a non-structural gusset and the parent metal isn’t thinned by rust. We won’t weld a cracked load-bearing bracket – the heat-affected zone is already compromised, and a re-crack leaves you with a gate that won’t open and a second trip charge. When we assess it, we’ll tell you straight whether repair or replacement is the right call. Call (469) 530-2485 for an exact quote – estimates are free.
Standard bracket swaps run 90 minutes to two hours. Post reinforcement or custom fabrication needs half a day, including concrete cure time if we’re pouring a collar. We schedule, not rush – measured work holds up. Call (469) 530-2485 for an exact quote – estimates are free.
We carry fabricated equivalents for 740, 844, and S800 series mounting hardware, plus raw steel stock and a 110-volt MIG rig for field modifications. OEM FAAC brackets are available next-day if your application specifically requires them. Most Los Angeles properties get same-day completion with our fabricated parts.
