DoorKing Access Control Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
DoorKing access control installation in Los Angeles typically runs $1,200 – $2,800 for a standard residential keypad or card reader system, including the controller, wiring, and programming. Most jobs are completed in one visit once parts are confirmed, and we carry DoorKing-compatible components on our trucks across Los Angeles County. You’ll know the part is failing when your gate stops responding to codes, the keypad goes dark intermittently, or visitors can trigger the gate but residents cannot.
We’ve been installing and servicing DoorKing equipment in Los Angeles since 2008. The Valley heat and coastal salt air both find their way into control enclosures, so we spec outdoor-rated housings and sealed connectors as standard practice, not extras.
Which DoorKing Models This Applies To
DoorKing’s access control line breaks into three main series: the 1800 series (standalone keypads), the 1830/1833 series (telephone entry with built-in relay control), and the 1835/1838 series (PC-programmable multi-door systems). The model number is stamped on a metal label inside the enclosure door, usually upper right. If that label is sun-faded, check the PCB itself; DoorKing prints the revision code near the terminal block.
Here’s where owners get tripped up: a DKS 1812-081 telephone entry system uses a different relay board than the 1812-090, even though the housings look identical. The 081 is single-door; the 090 is multi-door with an expansion header. We verify this on site before ordering anything.
We stock both OEM DoorKing boards and quality aftermarket equivalents from Linear and Viking that interface cleanly with existing DoorKing field wiring. For Los Angeles properties with HOAs, we often recommend staying OEM to avoid warranty disputes with the management company. For standalone residential gates in Silver Lake or the Palisades, the aftermarket units save money and carry the same one-year guarantee from us.
Signs Your DoorKing Access Control Installation Is Failing
- Keypad beeps but gate doesn’t move. The keypad is receiving power and accepting the code, but the relay board isn’t closing the contact to the gate operator. Usually a failed output relay or corroded terminal block from moisture intrusion.
- Intermittent operation, worse after rain. Los Angeles doesn’t get much rain, but when it comes, water finds the low point in conduit runs. We see this often in hillside properties around Laurel Canyon where drainage backs into the pedestal base.
- System works for visitors but not for residents with remotes. The receiver module is failing while the keypad logic remains intact. DoorKing uses separate receiver boards in most 1800-series units; one can die while the other runs fine.
- Display is dim or flickering. Power supply capacitors age out, especially in direct sun. A 12V transformer reading 10.5V under load will cause erratic behavior long before total failure.
- Programming resets after power outage. The onboard battery or EEPROM retention circuit is shot. This is common in units installed before 2015; the lithium cell has a ten-year life and many are due.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Component | Typical Range (Installed) |
|---|---|
| Standalone keypad replacement (1800 series) | $1,200 – $1,650 |
| Telephone entry system (1830/1833 series) | $1,850 – $2,400 |
| Multi-door programmable system (1835/1838 series) | $2,200 – $2,800 |
| Receiver board swap only | $480 – $720 |
| Power supply / relay board replacement | $650 – $950 |
What drives the range: existing wire condition, whether the pedestal needs replacement, and how many entry points the system controls. A straight swap in Pasadena with good conduit and a single gate is at the low end. A three-gate HOA system in Marina del Rey with rotted underground cable and a failed loop detector is at the high end.
Every installation gets a written price before we touch a tool. The number includes all parts, labor, programming, and testing. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the full installation; if anything fails inside that window, we come back free. No argument, no re-diagnosis fee.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s safe checking, and then there’s work that belongs to someone who understands what 120 volts across a relay contact can do to a gate operator’s logic board.
What you can do: verify the breaker hasn’t tripped, check that the GFCI outlet hasn’t popped, and confirm the keypad cable hasn’t been yanked loose by landscapers. Take a photo of the model label and the wiring before you touch anything; that photo saves us twenty minutes on site.
What you should not do: open the control enclosure and start moving low-voltage wires around. DoorKing systems share ground references with the gate operator; a wrong connection can backfeed 24V AC into a 12V DC circuit and fry both boards. The repair then costs triple what the original call would have.
We carry DoorKing-compatible controllers, relay boards, and power supplies on our Los Angeles trucks. Most days we can confirm your part, quote the installed price, and complete the swap in one trip. Call (469) 530-2485 and a live person picks up, even on Sunday.
FAQs
Twelve to fifteen years is typical for the main board, but the power supply and keypad membrane usually need attention around year eight. Coastal properties in Redondo or Manhattan Beach see shorter life from salt air; inland Valley installations fight heat degradation instead. Call (469) 530-2485 for an exact quote on your model – estimates are free.
Sometimes. A failed relay or capacitor can be soldered, but DoorKing doesn’t sell schematics to independent shops, and most board-level repair shops won’t touch access control electronics. We evaluate on site; if the trace damage is localized, we’ll tell you. If the CPU is fried, replacement is the only honest recommendation. Call (469) 530-2485 for an exact quote – estimates are free.
Two to four hours for a standard single-gate keypad, assuming the conduit and low-voltage wiring are intact. Multi-door systems with phone entry and directory programming take a full day, especially if we’re importing the resident database from the old unit. Call (469) 530-2485 to schedule – estimates are free.
We stock controllers, relay boards, power supplies, and keypads for the 1800, 1830, and 1835 series. We don’t carry every housing color or custom directory faceplate, but the components that actually fail are on the truck. If your pedestal is damaged or you need a specialty finish, we order it and return to complete the job. Call (469) 530-2485 – estimates are free.
Carver Gate Repair is an independent service provider and is not affiliated with DoorKing. We service DoorKing equipment as one of nine brands we support, including LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls.
We run every job to The Garrison Standard: written price before work starts, background-checked uniformed technicians, and a full year of coverage on every repair. Lonnie Burke started this operation in 2008 after welding school at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, and the crew still works on the same principle he learned back then – show up squared away, fix what’s broken, and don’t make the customer ask twice.
If your DoorKing system is acting up, call (469) 530-2485. A live person answers, 24 hours a day, and we’ll get a technician to your Los Angeles property with the right parts and a written price before any work begins.
